Microsoft gave computer makers a six-month extension for offering Windows XP on newly-shipped PCs. While this doesn ’t impact enterprise IT — because volume licensing agreements will allow IT to keep installing Windows XP for many years to come — the move is another symbolic nail in Vista’s coffin.

      USB 3.0 is fast, very fast. It is exciting for what can be accomplished using USB than the speeds that it achieves. At 4.8Gbit/s (maximum theoretical) or 600 MB/S (maximum achieved) it would seem plenty fast enough to handle just about any task that you can throw at it.

      A benchmarking exercise conducted by Florida-based software development company Devil Mountain Software showed that any improvements that Vista offered were more than outclassed by the venerable XP.

      The report shows that Vista, both with and without SP1, was slower than XP with SP3. It took more than 80 seconds to complete the test, compared to XP’s 35 seconds.

      SP1 made little difference to Vista where as the beta SP3 back for XP made it 10 per cent faster.
