Interesting Knol Links

28 July 2008 40 views 2 Comments

Last week Google announced their ‘Knol’ service and I (among others) questioned whether it would have a significant impact upon smaller publishers ability to rank well in Google’s search results.

Just thought I’d let everyone know, that on a search for how to backpack in Google is showing a top 5 result for Google Knol.

There are many who have covered what Google Knol is you can see what it is here and here these are my favorites, Aaron Wall has started his SEO basics Google Knol.

No need for intros here lets get to the MEAT!

We’ve been assured that just because content sits on Google’s Knol site, it won’t gain any ranking authority from being part of the Knol domain. OK, so a day after Knol has launched, how’s that holding up? I found 1/3 of the pages listed on the Knol home page that I tested ranked in the top results. I came away feeling that being on Knol does indeed give pages an advantage they might not get if they’d been hosted on some other brand new web site.

The Knol project is a site that hosts many knols — units of knowledge — written about various subjects. The authors of the knols can take credit for their writing, provide credentials, and elicit peer reviews and comments. Users can provide feedback, comments, and related information. So the Knol project is a platform for sharing information, with multiple cues that help you evaluate the quality and veracity of information.

Knols are indexed by the big search engines, of course. And well-written knols become popular the same as regular web pages. The Knol site allows anyone to write and manage knols through a browser on any computer.

Knol is absolutely hands down a rival to Wikipedia. Anyone who feels it isn’t is ill advised. My concern is more with how much real estate it’s going to take up in the SERPS.

I think Knol is going to take over the Web. the Temptation for Google to rank its own content well is just too high.
